The man accused of attacking Paul Pelosi, husband of the president of the United States House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi, was formally charged with assault and attempted kidnapping, after breaking into the couple’s home in San Francisco last week. passed, the federal prosecutor’s office announced Monday.
David DePape, 42, was charged with one count of “attempted kidnapping of a United States official while performing official duties,” according to the US Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of California.
That charge relates to Nancy Pelosi and carries a maximum of 20 years in prison. CNN previously reported that DePape allegedly yelled “Where’s Nancy?” after breaking into his home.
He was also charged with one count of assaulting an immediate family member of a US official with the intent to retaliate against the official. That charge relates to a crime allegedly committed against Paul Pelosi and carries a maximum sentence of 30 years in prison.
The federal charges against DePape are in addition to state charges that are also expected to be announced later Monday.
CNN reported on Monday that investigators in the case interviewed Paul Pelosi this weekend at the hospital, and that he was able to provide details of the attack, according to two law enforcement sources and a source familiar with the matter.
Those conducting the interview included investigators from the FBI and local law enforcement.
